The course in Finnish language and culture is intended to develop the student’s ability to communicate and cope in the Finnish language in various situations. The course provides skills and cultural knowledge necessary in Finnish society in general and in vocational education in particular.
The main emphasis of the course is learning the Finnish language. The course also teaches, besides Finnish language and culture, education and job market knowledge, societal and cultural knowledge, health education, IT skills and mathematics.
This course is right for you, if
- You are a resident in Tampere during the time of application
- You are able to read and write fluently in Latin alphabet
- You have completed at least basic education syllabus and you have sufficient learning skills
- You are able to attend school between 8am and 6pm every workday (25 hours/ week)
- You have not previously completed a qualification in Finnish or preparatory education for vocational training
- Your Finnish language skills are not higher than A1.3
New classes begin in January and August.
- Group 1. initial language level 0 (5 month course)
- Group 2. initial language level A1.3 at most (5 month course)

You may apply for the course by yourself online. The link is available only during the application period.

Admission tests
NOTE! Currently, new courses in Finnish language and culture will not be arranged.
Admission tests will be held at the Tredu Santalahdentie premises. The admission test includes a language test, a mathematics test and a formal interview. If you do not participate in the admission test, your application will be cancelled.
How is the Student Admission done?
Admission Criteria for Course in Finnish Language and Culture:
- You are a resident in Tampere during the time of application
- You are able to read and write fluently in Latin alphabet
- You have completed at least basic education syllabus and you have sufficient learning skills
- You are able to attend school between 8am and 6pm every workday (25 hours/ week)
- You have not previously completed a degree in Finnish tuition
- Your Finnish language skills are not higher than A1.3
Priority is given to applicants who have been recommended by the International Tampere Skills Centre Oske.
Based on the application form, the applicants are invited to the admission test. If the applicant does not meet the eligibility criteria, the applicant will not be invited. Maximum of 100 applicants can be invited to the admission test. If there are more than 100 applicants who meet the eligibility criteria, drawing of lots will be used to choose 100 applicants who will be invited.
In the admission test, the following things will be evaluated:
- You have a need for the course
- You are motivated to study
- You meet the requirements of the course
If the amount of eligible applicants eventually exceeds the amount of starting places, drawing of lots will be used for student admission.
Applicants will receive information about the student admission by email. Applicants must attend the starting day of the course in order to confirm their starting place. Absences on the starting day must be informed beforehand or the applicant loses his/her starting place.
The chosen applicants must be residents in Tampere. Tredu decides the criteria of student admission.
